The New Year

You’ve probably come across plenty of New Year articles, memes, and videos. Here’s another one, but I want to focus on intention, something I often write about on this wellness and healing platform. Many of us want change in our lives, but it can feel scary because change is uncomfortable. Growth is uncomfortable. I’ve read that snakes feel pain when they shed their skin, but it’s a necessary part of their growth. Finding a shed snake skin near your home might be unsettling, but it reminds us that growth, though sometimes painful and difficult, is important.

It’s encouraging to see more people talking about mental health and finding spaces to get support. Still, reaching out for help isn’t always easy. It’s simple enough to visit a doctor for a cold or cough, but seeking help for depression or anxiety can feel much harder.

When I was in kindergarten, I sat on a park bench, and a large splinter pierced my skin. I had to go to the doctor to have it removed. I remember crying and screaming as the doctor cut into my leg without numbing it. The doctor encouraged me, telling me how brave I was, and I remember looking at them, puzzled at how I could be brave while crying and asking them to stop. Later, I realized that enduring the pain and the procedure to remove the wood was being brave.

I often tell clients that simply coming to therapy is brave, and they should recognize this as a strength, knowing they want something different. The pain they feel during the process shows they are growing. Let this be encouragement and a reminder that, as you set new resolutions and goals for the year, you have the strength to achieve them.

Even if the process is difficult and painful, that is part of growth. In the end, you will see the results of your work and can reflect on your journey.
