Participants will be introduced to the PATH method of solution-focused treatment planning that enables clients to become more fully engaged in their own goal setting and to become more active participants in their healing.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify core conflicts that contribute to the emergence of problem behaviors
- Develop practical strategies to engage clients in the treatment planning process
- Identify theories and modalities applicable to treatment of childhood disorders

VIRTUAL ONLY
March 17, 2023
9:00 am -12:15pm EST
Often time clinicians find themselves in ethical dilemmas of how to ensure confidentiality of their client in play therapy, while parents/caregivers want to be part of the session. Sometimes wanting to know what is happening in session. Other times parents feel that the clinician’s job is to fix the child and are concerned that playing will not address the issues. The therapeutic powers of play are the mechanisms in play that produce the desired change in a client’s dysfunctional thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors (Schaefer & Peabody, 2016). Play therapists not only work with children in therapy but also their parents/caregivers as the family unit are dually influenced. This workshop will demonstrate how to engage parents/caregivers in the play therapy process, while maintaining confidentially and a strong therapeutic alliance with the child.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore the social, emotional, and physiological benefits of play therapy
- Demonstrate ways to explain the basics of the brain and benefits of play therapy while engaging the parents/caregivers in the process.
- Apply strategies for working with families

This workshop consists of evidenced based practices, art and play therapy, and how they play an instrumental part in helping children heal. Participants will be engaged in the therapeutic art and play techniques demonstrated to better understand their application and use with children.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify how using drawings as a means of communication enhances the play therapy session.
- Identify the therapeutic benefits of using drawing in play therapy.
- Highlight how catharsis can be difficult to reach when working with children who are challenged with complications of managing emotions.
- Demonstrate at least 6 play and art-based interventions for children utilizing the therapeutic powers of play.
